Johnson characterized the Democrats’ actions as “wildly inappropriate” and insisted that Trump’s message, which included the phrase “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH,” was a factual description of the crime of sedition. Johnson noted that legal experts would need to examine the wording in context.
Trump had earlier shared a repost from another Truth Social user stating, “HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD!!” Johnson acknowledged he had not reviewed the full scope of Trump’s posts but supported his criticism of the six House and Senate Democrats involved.
Johnson singled out Senator Mark Kelly and other lawmakers, saying their statements to military members were “beyond the pale.” He later clarified that he would not make further comments on the matter.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune disagreed with Trump’s execution suggestion but also criticized Democrats, stating that their remarks, while protected under the First Amendment, were “ill-advised and provocative.”
Following clarifications from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Johnson softened his remarks, emphasizing that he did not consider the Democrats’ actions as crimes punishable by death. He stressed the importance of congressional members avoiding instructions that could lead military personnel to disobey orders, calling such actions “dangerous.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned Trump’s comments, warning that the rhetoric risks inflaming political tensions nationwide. Schumer urged all lawmakers and Americans to unequivocally condemn the statements to preserve democratic norms.
