San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy Must Regain Confidence After Turnovers Against Panthers
The San Francisco 49ers managed a 20-9 victory over the Carolina Panthers, but quarterback Brock Purdy’s performance raised concerns. Purdy threw three first-half interceptions and struggled to pass beyond 10 yards in the second half, limiting the offense’s big-play potential.

Purdy emphasized the importance of maintaining confidence after turnovers. He stated, “As a quarterback, you can’t lose confidence in yourself. You can’t shrivel back and take a bunch of checkdowns.” This mindset is critical as the 49ers rely on his playmaking ability to drive the team forward.
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan has previously demonstrated a willingness to call timeouts to protect Purdy, highlighting the impact turnovers and hesitation can have on offensive efficiency. Purdy currently ranks second-worst in the NFL with a 5.3 percent interception rate, underscoring the need for balance between caution and aggression.
Purdy completed 22 of 24 passes inside 10 yards but struggled beyond that range, going 1-for-8 with three interceptions. While the 49ers’ defense limited Panthers quarterback Bryce Young and Christian McCaffrey, Purdy’s inability to consistently make deep throws disrupted offensive rhythm. Purdy dismissed his injured toe as a factor but acknowledged it has affected his timing.
Shanahan supported Purdy’s decision-making despite the turnovers, noting that the quarterback was slightly late on three throws that could have been completed. Tight end George Kittle echoed confidence in Purdy, emphasizing his ability to remain composed and bounce back from mistakes.
Looking ahead, the 49ers face a challenging matchup against the Cleveland Browns, where defensive end Myles Garrett has recorded 18 sacks in 11 games. Purdy’s confidence and ability to take calculated risks will be crucial against elite defensive pressure and harsh conditions at Lake Erie.
San Francisco’s playoff push depends on Purdy returning to his best form. The 49ers defense has performed admirably, but offensive consistency and big-play capability from Purdy will be essential as they face a critical stretch against competitive teams like the Colts, Bears, and Seahawks.
