‎Zelensky Urges US to Detain Putin After American Forces Capture Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro

‎Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly urged the United States to take action against Russian President Vladimir Putin after American forces captured former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in a dramatic overnight mission.

‎Zelensky made the remarks after being questioned about the US decision to dismantle Maduro’s rule, which followed President Donald Trump’s authorization of airstrikes on military targets near Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, early Saturday.

‎Responding to reporters after holding talks with European national security officials the same day, Zelensky expressed little hesitation in his reaction. He openly questioned how else he should respond to the operation carried out by US forces.
‎
‎The Ukrainian leader suggested that if authoritarian leaders can be removed in such a manner, Washington already understands what steps could follow. His comments pointed directly at Putin, as Russia continues its military campaign against Ukraine more than three years after launching its invasion.
‎
‎Following the capture of Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores, several countries, including Russia, called on the Trump administration to release the couple. Moscow emphasized the importance of establishing conditions that would allow existing disputes between the United States and Venezuela to be addressed through diplomatic dialogue.
‎
‎Despite those demands, Maduro and Flores were transported to New York City on Saturday night, where they are set to face federal charges related to narco-terrorism.
‎
‎President Trump stated that the former Venezuelan leader and his wife would face what he described as the full force of the American justice system.
‎
‎According to sources, the couple will be detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Their first appearance in federal court could take place as soon as Monday.
